Bamyan Kebab House, located in Winooski, Vermont, is the first Afghan restaurant in the state. Opened in June 2022 by brothers Awran and Wazirgul Hashimi, the restaurant is named after the Bamyan province in central Afghanistan, which means “shining light.” The brothers wanted to create more than just a dining space—they envisioned a welcoming spot that would serve as both a home for Afghan culture and a place for the broader community to experience the warmth and flavors of Afghan hospitality.
The menu at Bamyan Kebab House is built on traditional Afghan recipes using halal meats and authentic spices. Some of the standout dishes include grilled kebabs served over spiced basmati rice, flaky bolani stuffed with scallions and greens, and mantu—steamed dumplings filled with seasoned ground meat and topped with a savory yogurt sauce. Every dish is made fresh in-house, offering guests an honest and flavorful taste of Afghan culinary traditions.
Beyond the food, Bamyan Kebab House plays an important role in the local community. It serves as a gathering place for Afghan refugees and newcomers, helping them feel at home while introducing Afghan culture to Vermonters. The brothers have created a space where tradition, flavor, and a sense of belonging come together, making Bamyan Kebab House more than a restaurant—it’s a cultural bridge and a beacon of connection in Vermont.
