Kandahar Afghan Kitchen is a family-run restaurant in the Hampden neighborhood of Baltimore, created by Chef Assad Akbari and his brother Sadiq. Drawing from cherished family recipes passed down through generations, the brothers named the restaurant after their hometown, Kandahar—a city known for its rich culinary heritage. With previous experience at a renowned Afghan restaurant in the city, they opened Kandahar Afghan Kitchen to bring a fresh, heartfelt taste of Afghanistan to the local dining scene.
From the moment guests walk in, they’re welcomed by the warmth of an open kitchen, the aroma of slow-cooked stews, and the sight of handmade desserts like baklava stacked on the counter. The menu includes Afghan favorites such as mantu dumplings, eggplant stews, and the national dish, kabuli pulao—a fragrant rice dish topped with spiced lamb, raisins, and carrots. Each dish is crafted with care, combining tradition with a modern presentation that makes every plate feel special.
The dining space is intimate and decorated with Afghan textiles, rugs, and embroidery that reflect the culture’s deep appreciation for art and hospitality. Diners are encouraged to enjoy their meals family-style, sharing kabobs, naan, and sauces around the table.
