Afghan restaurant
Shaheen’s Afghan Cuisine in Omaha, Nebraska, is a family-run restaurant founded by Shahen Shah, an immigrant from Kabul with a passion for cooking. Without formal culinary training, he began by serving homemade Afghan meals to friends and community members. As word spread and support grew, he launched the restaurant in 2020, offering authentic Afghan dishes to a wider audience. The response was so positive that by 2023, Shaheen’s moved to a larger location in the Benson neighborhood to accommodate growing demand.
The menu is filled with traditional Afghan favorites, such as kabuli pulao—long-grain rice topped with tender lamb, sweet carrots, and raisins—mantu dumplings layered with lentils and seasoned yogurt, and rich lamb karai. Guests often praise the mix-combo kabob plates and hand-made baghlawa for their flavor and authenticity. Each dish is seasoned with care, blending spices that are distinctively Afghan, resulting in meals that are aromatic, hearty, and deeply satisfying.
More than just a restaurant, Shaheen’s is a cultural experience. The interior includes cozy seating areas inspired by Afghan tradition, with low tables and floor cushions that invite shared dining. Guests consistently comment on the hospitality, noting how the staff treats every visitor like family.
